Rivers State is one of the wealthiest states in Nigeria with abundant human and natural resources. However, despite the available resources, the state has been plagued with poor leadership and governance. Sir (Dr) Leesi Gborogbosi, a philanthropist and the Executive Chairman of Gborogbosi Foundation, has observed that the problem of Rivers State is not lack of resources but leadership inertia.
Sir (Dr) Gborogbosi explained that leadership inertia is a phenomenon where leaders fail to take decisive actions that will benefit their followers. In Rivers State, this is evident in the lack of continuity in governance. Since 1999, successive governments have failed to build on the achievements of their predecessors. Instead, they have chosen to destroy what was already in place and start afresh. This has led to a lack of progress and development in the state.
He believes that the solution to the problem of Rivers State lies in building a new generation of leaders who understand the significance of good leadership, economic development, peace, and social cohesion. These leaders should be mentored to practice positive and value-driven politics that will create happiness for the people. The Gborogbosi Foundation is seeking to collaborate with individuals and groups who truly love Rivers State to engage in mentoring programs for those who aspire to become leaders.
Sir (Dr) Gborogbosi, who desires to become the next Governor of Rivers State is concerned that many talents fail, and dreams are not yet attained because of the absence of mentorship. The lack of mentorship cuts across all spectrums of the society and professions. He urged the Rivers State Government to work with Foundations and NGOs to reverse the trend of bad leadership and inertia in leadership across all areas of governance.
He emphasized that if Rivers State is to create a better future, then individually and collectively, we must nurture and strive to attain a better version of ourselves. The Rivers State Government should set up programs to support the youth to achieve financial freedom and become trusted leaders who will keep their promises and refuse to engage in decisions from the onset that will not place the interest of Rivers State above personal interest.
Sir (Dr) Gborogbosi noted that past leaders of Rivers State are assets. These leaders represent the image of Rivers State. They can provide valuable networks and insights. Governors should demonstrate social perceptiveness and behavioural flexibility in relating with our past leaders and ensure Rivers State’s interest is foremost.
He reiterated that Rivers State has a problem of leadership inertia. The solution to this problem lies in building a new generation of leaders. Mentoring programs should be set up to train these leaders. The Rivers State Government should work with Foundations and NGOs to reverse the trend of bad leadership and inertia in leadership. By doing so, Rivers State can create a better future for the people.
The Gborogbosi Foundation cares for the disadvantaged in society.
