Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State have been advised to focus their strategic plans and budget on delivering the sustainable development goals in their respective local government areas. This advice was given by Sir (Dr) Leesi Gborogbosi, a strategy and management consultant, in a news release in Port Harcourt.
According to Sir (Dr) Gborogbosi, the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are crucial for the development of any society. The SDGs, which are seventeen in number, include no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, sustainable communities, decent work, and economic growth among others.
The role of local government councils, according to Sir (Dr) Gborogbosi, should be to ensure that the basic needs of the people in the local areas are met according to the Maslow hierarchy of needs. This will ease the pressure on the state government, allowing them to focus on the big-ticket developmental drives.
Sir (Dr) Gborogbosi also encouraged Governor Fubara of Rivers State to provide good public governance that would address the higher needs of the people so that they can attain self-actualizations of their personal and collective dreams.
The Managing Director/CEO of Gabriel Domale Consulting suggested that the governance framework in Rivers State needs to be reviewed so that there can be a collaborative relationship between the state government and local government councils to deliver good public governance.
It is important to note that the SDGs are not only critical for the development of any society, but they are also essential for sustainable development. Local government chairmen should focus their efforts on delivering these goals to ensure that their local government areas are developed sustainably.
By focusing on the SDGs, local government chairmen can foster a culture of inclusiveness, equality, and sustainable development in their respective areas. They can achieve this by implementing policies that promote economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
In conclusion, it is imperative that local government chairmen in Rivers State focus their strategic plans and budget on delivering the sustainable development goals in their respective local government areas. This will not only ease the pressure on the state government but also promote sustainable development and foster a culture of inclusiveness, equality, and environmental sustainability.
