Nigeria is a country with over a 200million people, located in the western part of Africa. It is known for its political prowess after several coups.
In 1999 the military officially handed over to an elected civilian government, which marks the beginning of democracy in Nigeria, which in turn becomes the bedrock to which our political systems are built and become the susceptibility of our political atmosphere.
Since the inception of democracy in Nigeria, its politics has been about two major political parties which can be referred to as the “Siamese twins” of the political space of Nigeria, which have a lot of those believed to be top-gear politicians sway between these political parties in search of power.
While there can never be any substitute for democracy, it is quite unfortunate that the political terrain has not made tangible progress for over 22years for a major reason that the same people revolve around power. The future of our politics is inarguably in two ways, whether we will make progress or not, and whichever results, we are only going to know if we continue with the status quo or make positive change.
Politics in Nigeria is believed to be controlled by Politicians, it has become a patch in eyes of the masses and utilisation of ignorance and negligence on the part of politicians.
As the 2023 general elections draw closer we have seen parallel movements ready to oppose the status quo, which brings about the third force, it is the awakening of the electorates and emergence of our due responsibility as citizens which pay no mind to a political party but the competence of whoever seeks to be in the helms of affairs.
This alone means positive signals to political alleviation and a future of political freedom and returning of power to the masses who elect leaders. The eye-opener is a clear indication of what the future holds for Nigerians and political future.
In as much as a lot of Nigerians are living up to the task on taking the bull by the horn by changing the narrative, there are still a lot of people who don’t want things to change because of their beneficial engagements with the corrupt system. If Nigerians continue to believe in those who make the situation, it is obvious we will never have a choice than to continue with the exact status quo.
What we have today in Nigeria will one day be history, but histories are created by men, and it may not be significant in the future if the history is not one that brings positive change.
The future of politics in Nigeria can be positive if the following are not taken lightly:
- Bad conducts of elections; Nigeria has never conducted free, fair and credible elections. Those found wanting in these acts should be dealt with in according with the law.
- Politicians should be held responsible for failed results due to bad policies and the execution of projects.
- Our political parties should treat every member equally irrespective of financial standing.
- Every electorate should live up to responsibility and take part in the political affairs of the nation.
And several of them all.
The future of Nigeria Politics is still in doubt and wavering, and there’s no certainty that we would get it right with the present system. The necessary change we seek to be compared with other countries whose political system is of a good standard is puny.
To have a great effect politically, we need great change, ranging from political parties, individuals, politicians, law enforcement agencies, the military, government parastatals, traditional institutions and all other well-meaning organisations.
Note: Our Political future is still in doubt, and if we continue in the status quo it only means one thing, Political degeneration and degradation. While we hope we should be able to analyse the fronts and signals that revamp political system.
We must do everything we can as a people to salvage our country and return it to the people who own it, which is every Nigerian. Let us learn to decide who we want and not who they give us. Politics is collective to surmount pressures and bring necessary change.
One thing that never dies is hope, as long as Nigeria lives, we will steadily find means to put it in the right direction. God bless Nigeria.
